Mr Aly Mawji
Resident Representative in Afghanistan for the Aga Khan Development Network
This year’s winner was chosen for his leading philanthropic work that has contributed to the long-term development of Afghanistan and a strengthening of its communities. Under the leadership of Mr Mawji, the Aga Khan Development Network has been responsible for a highly effective and courageous programme providing assistance for the reconstruction of Afghanistan and their work has become a source of stability and progress in all regions of the country.
The Prize Award Ceremony took place at the 16th Annual General Assembly and Conference of the the European Foundation Centre held from June 4th - 6th 2005 in Budapest.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) focuses on health, education, culture, rural development, institution-building and the promotion of economic development. It is dedicated to improving living conditions and opportunities for the poor, without regard to their faith, origin or gender.
The Selection Committee for the Prize was chaired by High Representative Javier Solana, Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union and President of the Madariaga European Foundation.
